Pediatric Clinical Research Scholar Program: Washington, DC

The consortium of three Departments of Pediatrics (Children's National Medical Center George Washington University, Howard University Hospital and Georgetown University Medical Center) was awarded a grant (K-12) in the fall 2002 for a Pediatric Clinical Research Scholar (PCRS) Program in Washington, DC by the National Institute for Research Resources, National Institutes of Health. The program's goal is to train junior pediatric faculty members in clinical research. It is designed to train the scholars in clinical investigations under the guidance of qualified, senior faculty. Scholars admitted to the program will be expected to conduct research that will use the facilities and resources of the General Clinical Research Centers (GCRC) within one or more of the three institutions. Similar to the NIH K-23 awards, this K-12 award provides salary support (up to $90,000 + fringe benefits) for not less than 75% and preferably 90% time and effort dedicated fully for mentored patient-oriented research experience and education. Up to an additional $30,000/year in research and education expenses can be provided. The Lead Mentor of the successful candidate can be compensated for up to 5% time (up to the NIH allowed maximum) + fringe benefits. The duration of training is expected to average three years (range 1-5 years) depending on availability of funds and the specific needs of each trainee. Each award is for a period of one year and renewable annually based on satisfactory progress in meeting agreed upon research and training goals. Successful candidates may be eligible for education loan repayment (NIH extramural loan repayment program for pediatric researchers, NOT-OD-01-063, http://www.lrp.nih.gov/NIHLRP/about/extramural/index.htm).
