Biostatistics and Informatics Core

The Biostatistics and Informatics Core provides consultation on methodological and informatics issues associated with research.
Staff, under the direction of Robert McCarter, Sc.D., are available to assist researchers in all stages of research, including protocol design and development, study implementation and conduct including quality assurance and informatics issues, reporting and analysis of data, as well as interpretation and publication of results. Statistical support may include sample selection and randomization in addition to the more traditional roles of sample size determination and development of analysis plans.
The Core has created and continues to enhance CHRIS, the Children's Hospital Research Information System, that provides extensive informatics support for all facets of a research project. Informatics services include database design and information management, development of web-based data collection instruments, data validation and quality assurance, data security and confidentiality that meets HIPAA standards, and reporting for data and safety monitoring. Larger or specialized projects may need to be set up as a collaborative effort and should be discussed with the Core Director. Investigators are strongly advised to seek Core input in the early phases of study design and protocol development prior to submission to the GCRC Scientific Advisory Committee. Core staff will be reviewing the methodology of all protocols requesting research center support. GCRC support is intended to supplement what is provided through extramural funding; it is not intended to replace it.
To schedule an appointment investigators should contact the Core Director, Dr. Robert McCarter at 202 476-3140 or e-mail: rmccarte@cnmc.org.
