Overview

In September 2000, the Pediatric General Clinical Research Center (PGCRC) at the Children's National Medical Center (CNMC) became one of 78 General Clinical Research Centers (GCRC) across the country supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Tthe center is supported by grant M01-RR020359 from the GCRC program of the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR/NIH). The grant is reviewed competitively every 3-5 years.

The grant provides funding for space, personnel, patient care cost and supplies. In addition to providing support for facilities and staff, the grant's patient care funds help to offset the patient care cost associated with many protocols. The patient care costs, called ancillaries, are defined services routinely available through a hospital or clinic for all patients, such as laboratory tests, x-rays, and pharmacy costs. These funds supplement the investigator's budget to allow for optimal and efficient implementation of the research protocol. The NCRR has designated the PGCRC space as an outpatient/inpatient facility for pediatric patients and healthy volunteers participating in clinical trials.
